Scenic Flight and Lexi's Arrest!
This morning we went on a scenic flight in a twin engine Beechcraft over to Mt. Everest and back. Good visibility and wonderful views.
Later we went to the US Embassy for introductions and a security briefing. We were not allowed to bring cameras into the embassy. As soon as Lexi's camera was returned to her, she attempted to photograph the embassy, and was reprimanded by security guards. We escaped to the street, where Lexi again began to take pictures of the embassy. Guards ran across the street and took her and her camera into custody. We eagerly awaited her release as she was interrogated for a half hour. Wow! - M
In my defense, I was not arrested, only briefly detained and questioned. We had peaceably left the grounds of the Embassy, crossed the street, were about to get into our taxi and I just thought I would get a pic of the general grounds of the Embassy, which are quite nice. It was quite a production of being led away by the Nepali police. After much explaining and documenting in the "water cooler room," I eventually had to delete the photo from the camera, but was returned safe and sound. Everyone is getting their tax dollar's money worth out of that one. The flight was awesome. It's Mt. Everest in the center of the lower photo.
We're getting ready to leave Kathmandu on Friday, all the medication, supplies and food is being prepared in the next couple days. We'll have a 6 hour bus ride out of town. We'll then start our 6 day walk to the outpost. It's the end of the monsoon, and the word on the street is that there are many leeches on the first couple days hike. One Nepali guy told us to use either salt or lime juice to get them out. "No pull" he said, but I think I'll have a hard time not. -L

Your pictures are great! I'm enjoying your blog very much. It's true about salt and leeches, they dehydrate. I hope Martin's ankle is up for the 5 day walk. I suppose he could ride a Yak. Keep on keeping on.
ReplyDeleteHuh...I always figured Martin to be the scofflaw of the pair.
ReplyDeleteOh. . .my. . .God! Lexi, you have destroyed the family's reputation. Must you always be such a non-conformist? Now you'll be on the CIA's watch list and be detained every time you get on an airplane - body cavity searches and all that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your adventure. I get a real yak (I mean, yuk) out of it. Safe travels.

awesome views. i just ate a mini artichoke from MT. It was tasty. B is adjusting to life in SD pretty well. As Pat says, "she's doing much better than I would be if I came home and all your stuff was gone." We've left off with the herbs juice and she seems fine even with the carpenter here today to install cabinet doors. She and V happily eat their meals on opposite sides of the living room with no growling. We went for a walk on Sunday and the neighbors who foster elderly dogs fawned over B for quite some time. They love border collies. B enjoys V getting her teeth brushed each evening because it means she gets another treat for the day. So far, all types tested are approved with wagging tails. Stay out of trouble.
