Self Explanatory

Tomorrow morning we have a six hour bus ride to the trailhead, then we leave all nasty exhaust behind for two and a half months. Whew. City life is fairly high impact. The first two days of our approach to Manang is tropical, and leeches infiltrate the socks and boots of trekkers.
Good fun. - Martin

Yesterday we had lectures on AMS (acute mountain sickness), HAPE (high altituded pulmonary edema) and HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) from a very knowledgable Nepali physician, who is internationally published and actually wrote the chapter on AMS for Harrison's text on Internal Medicine. We were briefed on using the Gamow bags and talked about helicopter evacuations, all of which makes us very excited to get on the road. We'll start walking tomorrow with the porters, our cook Indira and the other MD and RN on our team. We're looking forward to some cooler weater!

Congrats to Tuli and Danielle on their upcoming pregnancy and we're excited you're coming back home to Bozeman!

Happy Anniversary to my mom and dad, who have made it together for 40 years now and are still going strong!

I'm jealous of you guys Susie and Jessica for the Curly lake adventures! Who needs brakes on the DH anyway?

  1. Hi, Leeches will be challenging! Best of luck on a successful trek!
Went to see Pet Shop Boys with Zak last night, and Dave Stromdahl was the opening DJ. Small world.
Alice is practicing her Spanish every chance she gets, and we start piano this weekend... Lots of fun!
    Take care, J

Today, at the height of the rummage/moving sale, a gorgeous bouquet arrived with Dad's favorite flower colors (blue and yellow) and my favorite flowers(callas, delphiniums and red mums). What could be a better surprise anniversary gift than that? Thank you for thinking of us at such a busy time. Tomorrow we leave for Blue Fin Bay to try to forget the moving and packing for two days.
We are avidly following your tales of travel. I was not surprised that you handled yourself so well with the Embassy "arrest" so I didn't have to give them a call(:
Good luck with the leeches, and Molly is right, salt really does work. Lots of love and family karma for safe travel will be with you on your next trek.
But if you really want to know the secret of leech control you should consult with one who has been there.-Your Dad!

  3. While you're wading in leeches, I'll be on a fall color tour to Ely with Becky (Friday - Sunday). We'll shop for Mucklucks. Then, next week, I'm going to to Boston and Nova Scotia for two weeks with Nancy. We hope to eat mussels, lobster and other seafood, and again, see fall color. In Halifax, I'm going to meet the former engineer, now knitting designer, who did the triangle vest pattern that I enjoyed working on so much.
Enjoy your hike. Thanks for keeping us all updated.

  4. Hi guys, just back from the Pyrenees. Had an awesome time! Bike box worked like a charm. We even got out of paying for the return leg of the trip. We'll load up some pictures and send a link soon.

Love reading your posts. Keep on sending them. And, Lexi, please try to stay out of trouble with the police.

  5. I knew you two couldn't keep out of trouble! Bozeman's having a beautiful fall, but we had our first snowfall in the high country last night. So far no rain to speak of so no real test of your new roof yet. All good here.
