First and Worst...

Someone needs a haircut. You decide who.

We had our first goat for dinner the other night, and it was just terrible. It seems that there isn't any differentiation between bone, skin, organ or meat. It's all just GOAT. The goats here are also ridiculously cute, shaggy, curly horns and really agile on the terrain. So tonight, Indira, our cook, just got some MORE goat (stomach, liver, looks like some muscle) and she is very excited. I'm happy I've got some Swiss chocolate, it's not bad as a main course, actually. We brought up 1 liter of Jamison whiskey and 1 pound of Illy coffee from Kathmandu. Both are disappearing disappointingly fast.

We're now on our third day of cloudy, cold, rainy weather. Our medical assistant and translator, Gobi, was supposed to fly in yesterday but all the flights were canceled due to the weather. Looks like tomorrow might be our next best shot at getting him up here. The snow line is marching steadily down towards town.

Martin gave his first lecture on AMS yesterday and did a great job. We've had around 30-40 people at the lectures, everyone's asking questions and very curious about the mechanics of AMS. We've also had some "know it alls" who like asking questions only to prove how smart they are. It's all good fun!

Martin's birthday is Thursday and I'm hoping to get a big chocolate cake for him. They have these cool solar collector ovens here, it's the only way to bake. If the weather improves we're going to go on a 2-3 day outing, hopefully up to some high country.

  1. Hi Lexi & Martin:
Thanks, again, for the pictures and update. I'm soon to be done with my adventure. Yesterday we sailed across the Bay of Fundy from New Brunswick to Maine and are staying in Bar Harbor for 2 nights. It must be the place to be because the Queen Mary was in the harbor yesterday. I am fulfilling my goal of eating seafood everyday and enjoying the fall color. Tomorrow we'll have another day in Boston and then fly home. I've enjoyed this trip so much and keep thinking of how you would be sailing and biking here. I'll be happy to return to my routine and see Julie & Alice. Take Care. Don't let Nepal "get your goat".

  2. Mmmm goat... now that brings back memories!

    Happy Birthday Martin!
And Dad says Happy Birthday to you as well. He has figured out how to access and read your blog but not how to post yet. Reading your blog is a big technology motivator for him. I had to poach some wifi from the casino to show it to him, but now he's on it!

And Happy Anniversary very soon to both Martin and Lexi!

Things are well here... we changed the words of Alice's new piano song from "Go Tell Aunt Roadie," to "Go tell Aunt Lexi". Much more motivating!

Post more pictures... Alice loves to see them!

  3. Hmmmmm.....chocolate cake. The question is will Lexi get to have any cake? Sharing of the treats is likely more difficult, fewer and farer between. Oh, but there is the bakery!

May I suggest 2 cakes? Happy (early) birthday Martin!

    Hugs from the Nelsons!

  4. We are gearing up for our trip to Sun Valley. With your map in our hands, we are hoping to see more sun than snow. But it is fall time in the Rockies . . .Who needs brakes anyway?

Would you mind if I put together another CD for you? I am hoping you liked some of the music off the last one. I have a new song just for you, Lexi. "If your gonna do wrong buddy do wrong right." That's our girl! We miss you.

  5. All parts of Goat you say.... sounds like a good test for the paleo diet. We should send Tim. The scenery looks epic. wow. Bailey is too smart for me. Tried to get her to take a pill by hiding it in peanut butter (works every time for voo) but b just licked around it. I tried putting it in more peanut butter and putting it in her food. She then proceeded to take every individual piece of food out of her bowl, lick it, drop it on the floor and then eat the food (not the pill.) I've solved the problem by hiding (squooshing) it in a chewy louie and giving one to voo at the same time. Her fear of voo getting her treat overcomes her suspicion of me. Happy Birthday Martin, and happy anniversary to you both.

  6. Ah, more snow in Bozeman. Or, is it rain? A little of both? Either way, it means more time on the trainer. We're facing a month of double-header cross races every weekend. Good thing cross is fun. We're looking forward to December, when we can do things like have dinner parties, etc. Your photos look awesome. And, hearing about Bailey's vigilence made my day. Happy Bday Martin and happy anniversary to the both of you. --Amy

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARTIN!! We are hoping that the chocolate cake works out and that you had a great birthday. What more could a person ask for than a travel adventure AND a food adventure all at the same time. Goat would probably be a challenge even for me. Bravo to you both for giving it a try.

  11. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and Happy Anniversary to both of you! It is cold and snowy in Bozeman. Dusty is fairing well in the weather, Ellie however doesn't have quite the coat or fat layer. We are headed to Cali for a couple of weeks for garden tools shows. Tuli is hoping to clean up, but california has no money right now so we'll see how it goes. We are trying to locate a good goat recipe for you. Perhaps a whisky marinade and then dipped in chocolate might work. Tuli wants to make sure that the goat is organic and sustainably harvested... and recommeds picking up some goat hides to make goaty clothes of the north. Miss you all. Love, Danielle and Tuli
