Kang La

Stephen and I hiked up to Kang La pass two days ago. It is a seasonal route that connects the Manang valley with the next valley to the northeast. "Naar" is it's name, and it's the home of the snow leopard. The pass is at 5300m elevation, and is the highest I have been so far. Also shown are Brandom's friends from Whitefish, Karen and Jen, dancing with the local kids in the courtyard of the HRA outpost. So far we've meet very few Americans, and most of them seem to be from Montana! The final picture shows a Manangi woman who was the lucky recipient of the few pairs of glasses that we have to give away. Today the patients have all been Nepali, with complaints ranging from scalp lacerations to burns. - Martin

  2. WOW, Martin, the pictures are awesome. We especially loved the local "glasses" recipient. Will there be more info about the mysterious snow leopard?? It is probably a harsh life for the local people, but the scenary looks almost fairy tale.
We are having a strange fall. Yesterday, we had a mix of snow and rain for about 3 hours. The flakes were large and downy, and the early snowfall would have been lovely if it hadn't been October 23. It has rained consistently most of the month.
Rick went grouse hunting yesterday north of Duluth, hoping to bag enough grouse for a Christmas dinner, but with the rain/snow, even the hunting dogs had a hard time smelling the birds. Next try is for pheasant early November.
I had lunch with Jean Petersen last evening. She has her PHD in gifted counseling and is a tenured professor at Purdue. She is a bundle of energy and her area of study is so interesting.
We're looking forward to your next blog--keep up the great journal writing.
